Ringwood couple is charged with stealing copper from former Essex County Hospital complex

CEDAR GROVE — A Ringwood couple faces theft charges after they were arrested at the former Essex County Hospital Complex in Cedar Grove on Wednesday, authorities said.

Cedar Grove police were on patrol at the facility when they heard someone removing copper from the roof of the structure, said Essex County Sheriff Armando Fontoura. The officer found a ladder propped against the side of the building and a black Jeep Cherokee parked nearby, said Fontoura.

Officials from the Sheriff’s Office and Verona Police and fire departments were called to gain access to the roof, and as firefighters began to climb, police noticed John Viglione, 52, of Ringwood, attempting to flee the building from a rooftop window.

Officers entered the building and captured Viglione, said Fontoura.

Viglione’s girlfriend, 46-year-old Susan Baker, of Ringwood, allegedly drove Viglione to the scene. She was arrested a few hours later when she arrived at Verona Police headquarters to ask who patrolled the former hospital.
