Iconic Fountains of Wayne store's fate is uncertain after closing doors for day

Saturday March 14, 2009, 11:07 AM

Fountains of Wayne, the bandFountains of Wayne, the iconic store on Route 46 that inspired the name of a rock band, closed its doors to shoppers on Friday, fueling speculation that it was preparing to go out of business, according to a report in The Record.

According to the report, some shoppers were told Thursday by employees that the retailer would close after a clearance sale. Don Winters, whose family has owned and operated the store for more than 40 years, told The Record the situation is still evolving, and news on the fate of the business would likely be released next week.

The store, located in Wayne, sells lawn ornaments, outdoor furniture and quirky Christmas decorations.

The store received national attention after Montclair native Adam Schlesinger founded Fountains of Wayne, and the band had a hit song with "Stacy's Mom."

In 2001, the store had a featured role on HBO's "The Sopranos."

I for one am sorry to see them go...it was a tradition to go look at the displays every Christmas, and now that Fortunoffs is gone too...

I agree, Didn't they have a really big Xmas display? I mean like a whole room full of stuff. It was more like an exhibition than a store.
