A resident of Skytop Road called police to report a small black bear running down the driveway at about 3 p.m., said police Chief Richard Vanderstreet. Police began checking the area, and then another person reported a bear on Fairview Avenue. Police followed the bear down Fairview, between Young Avenue and Brunswick Road. It then crossed Pompton Avenue into a wooded area near Community Park.
"At that point, we lost sight of it. Its whereabouts are presently unknown," Vanderstreet said. "It didn't display any aggressive behavior. It wanted to get away from us rather than making contact with us."
He advised residents who see a bear to call police and not approach the animal.
He said police have been in touch with state wildlife officials.
"They advised us at this point if the bear isn't aggressive and not becoming a nuisance, to just leave it alone at this point," he said.
Occasionally, there are reports of bears in Cedar Grove, and people familiar with bears have reportedly seen paw prints, Vanderstreet said.
"There has been talk that people have seen bears, but this is the first encounter we've had with the police department I can verify," he said.
Vanderstreet said it's likely the same bear that was also spotted in Fairfield and North Caldwell on Tuesday.
