Arthur Laurents (July 14, 1917 – May 5, 2011) was an American playwright, librettist, stage director, and screenwriter. His credits include the stage musicals West Side Story and Gypsy and the film The Way We Were.
Laurents died in New York City on May 5, 2011 of pneumonia complications, as reported by The New York Times. He was predeceased by his partner, Tom Hatcher, with whom he had lived for more than 50 years. Following a long tradition, Broadway theatre lights were dimmed at 8 PM on May 6, 2011 for one minute in his memory.
