The motive for the shooting that left the officer, 26 year-old Gerald Veneziano, of Belleville, in critical condition, is still unclear.

Veneziano was in the fairly affluent Fairfield Township, NJ, and on his way to start a 7p.m. shift, when he saw the Dodge in a parking lot at 300 Fairfield Road, and ran the license plate number at 6:15 p.m.

Shortly after he checked the license number, the occupants shot Veneziano three times in the upper body.

Authorities say the officer -- a 3-year veteran of the force -- managed to fire off thirteen shots in return, but it's not known whether he hit anyone. Authorities are asking citizens to keep in mind that the Dodge may have body damage from Veneziano's fire.

Fellow officers found him after someone who heard the gunshots called 911. The officer was able to provide colleagues with a description of his assailants and their vehicle.

He was flown to University Hospital in Newark, NJ, and was operated on Sunday. He is reportedly in stable but critical condition, and there are unconfirmed reports that he is in a drug-induced coma.

Concerned police officers, friends and relatives arrived at the hospital and a manhunt is currently in progress.

Authorities are offering $40,000 for any information leading to the arrest of the suspects.

Nor but in sleep findeth a cure for care.
Incertainty that once gave scope to dream
Of laughing enterprise and glory untold,
Is now a blackness that no stars redeem.
