JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said one of the teens who survived the fatal crash involving nine Ed White students is back in the hospital.
According to attorney Rick Block, 15-year-old Shannon Broome suffered a broken pelvis, broken leg and several broken ribs when an SUV crashed through her bedroom wall around midnight.
Nineteen-year-old Steven Nicholas Bryant was driving on Cahoon Road South around 12:11 this morning, the same street where Shannon Broome lives, according to JSO.
They said Bryant admitted to looking at his cell phone when his SUV ran off the shoulder. He then overcorrected and slammed into Broome's home, pinning Broome under debris.
Rick Block, Broome's attorney, said the family is very thankful for Jacksonville Fire and Rescue's quick response.
"They're grateful for the prayers and especially that the fire fighters did a wonderful job of extricating her from underneath all that concrete," Block said.
Broome was taken to Shands Hospital where she is set to undergo surgery tonight for her injuries.
"[Broome and her family], as you can imagine, are a mixture of being completely distraught at how could this happen, and extremely thankful to God for having spared her one more time. It's a miracle that she wasn't killed in this incident," said Block.
JSO cited Bryant for careless driving.
The driver's father, Mark Bryant, said he spoke with his son about the incident. Bryant said he's been asked not to comment, but he told First Coast News his son was text messaging when he drove off the road.
Mr. Bryant said he didn't find out who the homeowners were until Tuesday morning, and that Shannon was hurt.
Bryant said his heart goes out to the Broome family, whom he plans on speaking with tomorrow.
Broome was one of nine teens involved in an accident on Interstate 295 June 5. Four of the teens died, and five more were injured when the Ford Explorer overturned several times.
Brandon Hodges, 15, was driving. He suffered minor injuries.
2 SUV crashes in one day she survived.....wtf! Is it bad luck to be in 2 SUV crashes in 1 day....or is it good luck to be in 2 SUV crashes in 1 day and survive....
Does she got good luck or bad luck....
