NEWARK — A young New Jersey boy unknowingly shared cocaine with friends at a daycare center because his father allegedly told him it was candy.

But only one child ingested the drug and wasn't injured.

Newark police say 25-year-old Shaheed Wright of East Orange apparently put several baggies of cocaine inside his 4-year-old son's jacket after a near brush with police. The boy later shared the drugs with three other 4-year-olds at the center on Friday.

A teacher saw a girl had a small baggie in her mouth, then called authorities after seeing a white powdery substance inside.

The children were taken to a hospital, where Wright's son told police about "the candy." They searched the child's pockets and found more baggies containing cocaine.

Wright was charged with four counts of child endangerment and drug offenses. A phone listing for him could not be found, and it wasn't known if he had retained a lawyer.
