Officers from the New Jersey Park Police flocked to the scene of the Thursday morning break-in at Ringwood Manor and have taken the lead in the investigation assisted by Ringwood Police and State Police.

The state has confirmed reports of a break-in during the early morning hours Thursday at 19th century Ringwood Manor; however, no information is currently being released on what, if anything, has been stolen.

Larry Ragonese, spokesman for the state Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), said the crime was discovered at 7 a.m. Thursday, March 3 when Ringwood Manor staff arrived for work and found an open door and signs of intrusion into the former home of iron-maker Abram S. Hewitt.

As a result of the crime, the manor house, part of the state park system, has been closed to the public - its entrances taped off - until a complete inventory of the site's artifacts can be performed. That inventory was already underway Thursday afternoon, said Ragonese.

Although the manor is in a somewhat isolated spot, set off from a section of Sloatsburg Road that has few homes or businesses, Ragonese said that there were several deterrents to a crime of this sort.

"This is a building that has alarm systems," he said, and is patrolled on a regular basis by not only the New Jersey State Park Police but also Ringwood law enforcement.

Leading the investigation into the burglary is the NJ Park Police, with assistance from the New Jersey State Police and Ringwood Police.

Ringwood Police referred all comments to the Park Police, which fall under DEP jurisdiction.

Officials at the scene told Suburban Trends that guns and some other things had been stolen.

Ralph Colfax of the North Jersey Highlands Historical Society confirmed that a "very nice" Civil War Weapons collection is housed at the manor. When asked if the manor has anything worth stealing, he said, "it's a museum."

Ringwood Manor is a national historic landmark.
