Bandits Use Weather To Their Advantage... was created by riada
ELIZABETH — It was like that scene in "The Blues Brothers," in which John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd used their old police cruiser to smash through an enclosed shopping mall.
Except these guys in Elizabeth weren’t on a mission from God.
Instead, say authorities, a gang of masked thieves used a vehicle and the cover of this morning’s snowstorm to drive through the doors of a store at Jersey Gardens Mall. They then navigated its aisles in hopes of accomplishing their apparent mission: Rob a jewelry exchange inside the Elizabeth shopping center.
They never got that far, but were spotted by a maintenance worker who phoned police around 3:30 a.m., according to William Reyes, a city spokesman. At that point, he said, the three or more burglars were trying to break into the Jewelers on Fifth exchange.
The group jumped back in their vehicle — probably a pickup truck — and hightailed it out the way they came in: through the Burlington Coat Factory store. They left quite a trail of destruction, said Reyes and a spokeswoman for the store.
Danielle Arceneaux, a Burlington spokeswoman, said "there is considerable damage to the store." Nothing was taken, though, said Arceneaux.
A Toys "R" Us store, located down Kapkowski Road from the mall, wasn’t as lucky, Reyes said. Thieves, possibly the same group, used a vehicle to break down the doors to the store during the night, he said. They did not drive inside, but stole some electronics and rummaged through cash registers. Authorities said it wasn’t immediately clear how much was taken.
Reyes said the powerful snowstorm may have increased the thieves’ odds of success.
"They used the weather to their advantage," he said. "Because of the weather, they know there’s definitely a possible delay in having police arrive."
Similarly brazen burglars have been hitting convenience stores around Essex, Middlesex and Union counties, stealing cigarettes, entire cash registers and at least six ATMs, some containing thousands of dollars, authorities said.
Police initially looked into the possibility that an ATM was stolen from the Jersey Gardens Mall, but now believe that isn’t the case
