VERONA-CEDAR GROVE TIMES

Congratulations to the members of the Cedar Grove Township Council for taking a stand against big-time developer K. Hovnanian.

And best of luck to Essex County Executive Joseph DiVincenzo Jr., whose plans to build a large park have again been put on hold indefinitely.

Hovnanian had planned to build 464 units in the Hilltop. They appeared to have the blessing of some with political clout.

In the end, Councilman Joseph Chiusolo initiated the motion denying Hovnanian the right to build at the Hilltop, specifically at the site of the old Hospital Center.

The issue was complicated. Due to bills pending in the state legislature, it was unclear to the council how many moderate/low income housing units Cedar Grove would have to build if the complex came to fruition.

Hovnanian is suing the county over the right to develop land east of Fairview Avenue.

The developer said it would drop the lawsuit if Cedar Grove gave the go-ahead to build the homes and at times, DiVincenzo urged the council to adopt the compromise.

Now the county executive, in order to proceed with his park plans, must find another way to appease the developer – not just for the park, but to end a costly lawsuit.
