Research is a huge factor in UE. There are many options, the internet is a vast asset to us. People spend days trawling the internet, google is your friend. Their are dozens of other ways to get leads, your local newspaper will usually have a story on somewhere that is closing, check the news websites as well. Get in the car and drive around, you will be surprised at the stuff you find.
Ask around, you'd be surprised at how many people will mention to you about sites they have spotted even if they aren't explorers. The older generations will also be an asset to you.
Access to sites will vary, be prepared for fencing at most places, there are usually ways around it though. Sometimes windows and doors are boarded, don't give up, keep walking around the site for another entrance and remember that second story windows are not usually boarded. More and more sites have CCTV, this isn't the end of the world, find the best way round them, look for blind spots.
You will at certain sites come across the fact that you can not find a way in. For example in the situation of a bunker network you may have to get to it through another private building or need to access through a steel door that needs keys. Or another example, certain military sites may be derelict/unused but may still be under security.
Don't give up. There is always a way. There is nothing wrong with asking people for permission. Quite a lot of reports on sites have only come about by being given permission or being given a tour.
Be prepared for lots of dead ends though, it may sometimes take 10-20 phone calls or numerous letters in the process as you are passed from pillar to post. But eventually you will find the right person, be polite, explain what you want to see and why, and sound really keen and enthusiastic and make them feel really important, and 99% of the time you will get your way.
