Greystone Park Psychiatric Hospital battles bedbug infestation
PARSIPPANY -- The new Greystone Park Psychiatric Hospital is battling an age-old problem: bedbugs.
Exterminators have been called to the nearly 500-patient state facility in Parsippany which opened last year to eradicate bugs which have been found in some staff areas, including an employees’ break room and lockers, plus a patient’s bedroom.
The first bedbug sighting was on Nov. 11 and an exterminator was promptly brought in, said Ellen Lovejoy, a spokeswoman for the state Department of Human Services. A couple more bugs were found a few days later, prompting a renewed response which included bringing in an extermination company that employs dogs to sniff out the bugs, she said.
So far, no patients have been bitten, Lovejoy said.
"Unfortunately bedbugs are becoming a rampant problem everywhere,’’ Lovejoy said. "Even five-star hotels in New York are battling them.’’
Hospital Nurse Administrator Tanners Mollett, in a Nov. 16 e-mail to employees, said they should check personal items and homes to ensure the bedbugs are not transferred to and from the hospital. Greystone’s fire department was called in late last month "due to the emergency’’ to cut locks off employees’ lockers to allow access to exterminators, according to a second e-mail from Molett, dated Nov. 25.
The hospital has responded to bedbug sightings by aggressively cleaning affected areas, Lovejoy said. In the G-2 and F-2 wards, all patient wardrobes were emptied, clothing was bagged and placed in dryers for 20 minutes, then taken to the laundry for washing. All patients’ outerwear was steam cleaned.
In the employee break room, where a bedbug was found on a chair, all chairs in the room were wrapped in plastic and taken outside to a loading dock, according to a hospital document.
Lovejoy said extermination efforts will continue for the immediate future and hospital staff will be educated on how to deal with bedbugs in the hospital and at home.
...well i dunno what a bed bug is but time to wiki it....
